Clinical Nutrition Advice
Nutrition as part of treatment, recovery and management
Does your horse have a health condition in which nutrition and feeding management may play a role? This may include recurrent colic, gastric ulcers, laminitis, muscle problems or metabolic disorders. Clinical nutrition advice tailors the ration to the condition, the horse’s individual requirements and, where applicable, the veterinary treatment.
Who is it for?
- Horses with recurrent problems, such as colic, gastric ulcers or other gastrointestinal issues.
- Horses with muscle problems, metabolic or endocrine disorders such as EMS, insulin dysregulation, PSSM or PPID.
- Horses that need nutritional support during or after veterinary treatment.
What can you expect?
- Weighing session using our mobile horse scale
- Assessment of body condition according to the Henneke BCS scale
- Analysis of the current ration, including forage, complementary feed and supplements
- An evidence-based nutrition plan that takes into account the diagnosis, medical history, treatment and the horse’s individual requirements.
- Where relevant, coordination with the veterinarian or other treating professional.
Can be upgraded with:
- Manure testing
- Forage Analysis
Performance-focused Nutritional Advice
Nutrition tailored to training, workload and performance
For horses in regular work, it is not only the energy requirement that changes. The way energy is supplied, amino acid provision, recovery and — depending on the type of exercise — fluid and electrolyte requirements also play a role. The ration is therefore tailored to the individual horse, its workload and the type of work performed.
Who is it for?
- Sport horses in training and competition.
- Riding school and lesson horses in regular work.
- Driving and carriage horses, draught horses, endurance horses and other horses with a regular workload.
What can you expect?
- Weighing session using our mobile horse scale
- Assessment of body condition according to the Henneke BCS scale
- Analysis of the current ration, including forage, complementary feed and supplements
- Analysis of energy supply and expenditure, amino acid profile and recovery requirements.
- Where relevant, assessment of fluid and electrolyte provision.
- A nutrition plan tailored to the horse, the discipline, and the volume and intensity of training.
Can be upgraded with:
- Manure testing
- Forage Analysis
Age-Specific Nutrition Advice
Nutrition tailored to every stage of life - from foal to senior horse.
A horse’s nutritional requirements change throughout life. Growth requires a different balance of energy, protein, amino acids, minerals and trace elements than maintenance later in life. In senior horses, factors such as dental health, body condition, digestion and nutrient absorption may also influence what is needed, both practically and nutritionally.
Who is it for?
- Foals, yearlings and young horses in development.
- Senior and older horses with changing nutritional requirements.
- Older horses that struggle to maintain body condition, muscle mass or adequate feed intake.
What can you expect?
- Weighing session using our mobile horse scale
- Assessment of body condition and development appropriate to the horse’s stage of life.
- Analysis of the current ration, including forage, complementary feed and supplements
- Assessment of energy provision, amino acid profile, minerals, trace elements and key nutrient ratios.
- A nutrition plan tailored to age, development, body condition and individual requirements.
Can be upgraded with:
- Manure testing
- Forage Analysis
Reproductive Nutrition Advice
Nutrition tailored to breeding, pregnancy and lactation
Nutritional requirements change before and during reproduction. Body condition, energy provision, amino acids, minerals and trace elements require particular attention in broodmares and breeding stallions, throughout pregnancy and during lactation. The ration is therefore tailored to the individual horse and the stage of the reproductive cycle.
Who is it for?
- Broodmares before breeding and during pregnancy
- Lactating mares with a foal at foot
- Breeding stallions whose nutrition needs to match their body condition and reproductive workload.
What can you expect?
- Weighing session using our mobile horse scale
- Assessment of body condition according to the Henneke BCS scale
- Analysis of the current ration, including forage, complementary feed and supplements
- Assessment of energy provision, amino acid profile, vitamins, minerals and trace elements according to the stage of reproduction.
- A nutrition plan tailored to the horse, the stage of pregnancy or lactation, and its individual requirements.
Can be upgraded with:
- Manure testing
- Forage Analysis
Nutrition Rehabilitation
When nutrition needs to be rebuilt step by step.
After severe colic, intestinal surgery, prolonged hospitalisation or a period of greatly reduced feed intake, returning to a normal ration may take time and require careful, gradual rebuilding.
Some horses have little appetite or have become reluctant to eat certain feeds. Others are keen to eat, even though their full ration cannot yet be resumed immediately. Nutritional rehabilitation therefore focuses on a gradual rebuilding process that matches what the horse needs and can tolerate at that stage.
Where illness is involved, or recovery follows a procedure, this is done in line with the veterinarian’s treatment plan and instructions. Nutrition forms part of the recovery process; it does not replace veterinary care.
Sometimes nutritional rehabilitation does not begin with calculations, but with helping a horse regain the ability and willingness to eat.
Who is it for?
- Horses recovering from severe colic or intestinal surgery
- Horses that have had difficulty eating or have eaten too little for an extended period.
- Horses whose ration needs to be gradually rebuilt after illness, hospitalisation or intensive treatment.
- Horses that have become reluctant to eat or wary of certain feeds after a period of illness.
What can you expect?
- A plan for the gradual rebuilding of feed intake and the ration.
- Guidance on selecting suitable forage and complementary feeds.
- Tailored to factors such as appetite, manure, body condition and the course of recovery.
- Regular evaluation and adjustment as the horse becomes able to tolerate more.
- Where relevant, coordination with the veterinarian or other treating professional.
Weighing session using our mobile horse scale
Measure to manage — body weight as the foundation of good management.
A horse’s actual body weight is important information for nutritional management, monitoring growth or weight changes, and tailoring the ration and supplements more accurately. Yet body weight is still often estimated, even though those estimates can be considerably inaccurate.
With our mobile horse scale, we weigh your horse on location, calmly and with minimal stress. We combine the weight measurement with an assessment of body condition and muscle development, so you receive not just a number, but a clearer picture of your horse’s condition.
A single measurement provides a reliable baseline; repeated measurements make changes in weight and body condition visible.
Who is it for?
- Owners who want to know their horse’s actual weight and body condition.
- Breeders and youngstock yards that want to monitor growth and development.
- Horses where changes in body weight are important during training, recovery or rehabilitation.
- Riding schools, livery yards and sport stables that want to have their horses weighed periodically.
What can you expect?
- On-site weighing session using our calibrated mobile horse scale.
- Assessment of body condition according to the Henneke BCS scale
- Assessment of topline and muscle development.
- Brief explanation of the results, with an opportunity to ask questions.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
The nutrition advice is provided by Mira Van Puyenbroeck, a UK-trained and qualified equine nutritionist and founder of Equi Nutri Care.Depending on the situation, we may also coordinate with your horse’s veterinarian or other treating professional.
No. An equine nutritionist does not make a veterinary diagnosis and does not replace the veterinarian. In cases involving health problems, we work from the available diagnosis and medical information and focus on the role that nutrition and feeding management can play in treatment, recovery and ongoing support.
Because a suitable ration requires more than simply following the recommended amount on a feed bag. We weigh the horse, assess body condition and analyse the actual ration in detail, down to the level of vitamins, minerals and trace elements. We also take into account nutrient ratios, interactions and factors that may influence nutrient requirements or availability.
This makes it clear what the horse is actually receiving, what it needs, and where adjustments would be beneficial.
That depends on the question you have.
- General nutrition advice is intended for horses without a specific clinical or performance-related nutritional requirement.
- Clinical nutrition advice is suitable for horses with health problems where nutrition and feeding management may play a role.
- Performance-focused nutritional advice is intended for horses that are in work or training.
- In addition, there are specific programmes for age and stage of life, reproduction and nutrition rehabilitation.
Not sure which programme is the best fit for your horse? Feel free to get in touch, and we can look together at which type of support is most suitable.
The duration and price depend on the type of nutrition advice and the complexity of the situation. General nutrition advice, for example, requires a different approach from a clinical programme or nutritional rehabilitation. You can find the current scope and prices on the page for the relevant service.
This varies by insurer and policy. Some insurance plans reimburse certain forms of additional support, while others do not. We therefore recommend checking with your insurer in advance to see whether nutrition advice is covered by your policy.
