Clinical Nutrition Advice
NUTRITION AS PART OF TREATMENT, RECOVERY AND MANAGEMENT
Nutrition as a Complement to — Not a Replacement for — Veterinary Treatment
Does your horse have a health issue such as recurrent colic, gastric ulcers, PSSM, EMS or abnormal blood values? A carefully tailored ration can then form an important part of management, treatment or recovery.
Clinical nutrition advice focuses on the nutritional factors that are relevant to your horse’s condition and individual situation. We assess the complete ration, feed intake, body condition, housing and other factors that may influence nutritional requirements or feeding management.
The nutrition advice does not replace veterinary diagnosis or treatment. Where a diagnosis or treatment plan is already in place, this forms the basis for the nutritional guidance. Where appropriate, we work alongside and in consultation with the treating veterinarian or veterinary team.
This allows nutrition to be used in a targeted way where it can genuinely contribute — without attributing more to it than it can deliver.
I work alongside and in consultation with your veterinarian or treating team where needed or desired — always with your horse’s best interests at heart.
WHEN IS CLINICAL NUTRITION ADVICE RELEVANT?
- Horses with metabolic or endocrine disorders, such as EMS, insulin dysregulation or PPID.
- Horses with certain muscle disorders, including PSSM.
- Horses with abnormal blood values or conditions where liver or kidney function is relevant to the ration.
- Horses that are difficult to feed, lose weight easily or have insufficient feed intake.
- Horses recovering from illness, hospitalisation, surgery or intensive treatment.
- Horses with persistent issues where the veterinarian is investigating whether nutrition or feeding management may be playing a role.
Nutritional support can be an important part of the management and treatment of sick horses, but the approach varies considerably depending on the condition and the individual horse.
My training in equine nutrition includes nutrition-related disorders, anatomy, physiology and nutritional biochemistry. As part of my further training and professional development, I have also studied areas including EGUS, laminitis, epigenetics and plant toxicology. This knowledge forms the basis for a careful assessment of the role that nutrition and feeding management can play in treatment, recovery and long-term management.
WHAT MAKES CLINICAL NUTRITION GUIDANCE DIFFERENT?
- The veterinary diagnosis, diagnostic findings and any treatment are taken into account in the nutritional analysis.
- The ration is assessed in relation to the specific condition and the horse’s individual clinical status.
- We assess where nutrition, feed intake and feeding management can support treatment or recovery.
- When appetite or feed acceptance is reduced, we look for solutions that are both nutritionally appropriate and practical to feed.
- The plan is adjusted when the horse’s health status, treatment or feed intake changes.
- Where relevant, coordination with the veterinarian or other treating professional.
WHAT DOES CLINICAL NUTRITION ADVICE PROVIDE?
- A ration that takes your horse’s diagnosis, treatment and current condition into account.
- Insight into nutritional factors that may influence symptoms or recovery.
- Targeted support for treatment, recovery and ongoing feeding management.
- A nutrition plan that can be adjusted as the horse’s health status or treatment changes.
- Clarity on what is useful to feed — and what is simply not necessary.
“Finally, peace of mind”
